Leonardo's classic drawing establishes the basic symmetry of the square - the principle form of the orthodox grid. Jan Tschichold later determined this diagram in 1953 as the secret (Golden) canon. The classic proportions of the roman alphabet by Fra Luca Pacioli with an assist by Leonardo da Vinci, from a 1509 book called De Divina Proportione, is one of the earliest applications of the "golden section" to typographic form.
